Public speaking is not a skill that is exclusive only to a few people. In fact, there are many individuals who are only surprised to find out that they actually have the capability to speak in front of a crowd and do so in a convincing and professional manner. This is, however, something that should be learned first. Just like all other skills, effective public speaking definitely requires practice. If you wish to become a good speaker, you should also see to it that you spend ample time for mastering the art.
Preparation is a Must
You may wish to become a good impromptu speaker. This is after you may have seen others take the podium or stand in front of an audience and delivering what may seem to be very quickly thought of lines. What you may not know though is that such people actually spend a long time preparing themselves. They may not have written down what they want to say but in order to do effective public speaking, they certainly prepared for it by organizing their thoughts. This means making a list of the things that should be mentioned and arranging them in a logical manner to make the speech more effective.
It would be very disadvantageous for you to just consider an invitation to address an audience without making sure that you know what topic you should handle. If you have to do some research on the subject, then you should not hesitate to do so. One of the worst things that you could do in this regard is to talk about a topic that you absolutely lack in knowledge. If you do so, your audience would naturally get to hear effective public speaking on your part. In fact, they would certainly notice that you do not know what you are talking about.
The Importance of Knowing Your Audience
Always remember that public speaking is essentially communication. While it may be true that this is a form of one-way communication, as a speaker you should also know what your audience feels and what are their sentiments on the matter. In order to do effective public speaking, it is very important that you know your audience. This actually comes as part of the preparation. However, even as you continue speaking, it is also necessary that you listen or sense how the audience reacts to your delivery. If possible, you should be able to make adjustments according to it.
Call to Action and to Learn More
Even if you are given an hour to speak, you should always put in mind that you would still be unable to tell them everything that they must know. This is the reason why it would be good if you consider asking them to learn more about the topic themselves. Of course, you should also express a call to action afterwards. The reaction elicited from the audience should be your gauge whether you have done an effective public speaking or not. If you are effective, you would surely notice the warm response from the audience
